An extremely early Lord Palmerston signed document while he was Secretary of War in the War Office and yet to realize his ultimate Political Destiny as one of the Great British Statesmen and Prime Ministers of the Victorian Era.

Lord Palmerston signs this Travel Warrant for Jannet Rea, Wife of a Private in the 92nd Regiment, authorizing £1sh17 for her passage from London to Leith along with her child. A rare glimpse into the real workings of a war and the life of a private, when his wife and child are permitted to visit him by no less an authority than Lord Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston.

Palmerston was educated at Harrow, Edinburgh, and St John's College, Cambridge. He succeeded to his father's title on April 17, 1802 as the Third Viscount of Palmerston. Before he was 24 he stood in two contested elections for the University of Cambridge, losing both, but then entered Parliament as MP for a pocket borough, Newport, Isle of Wight, in June 1807. He began his political career as a Tory and a Junior Lord of the Admiralty from 1807. A few months later he delivered his maiden speech in the House of Commons in defence of the expedition to Copenhagen. This speech was so successful that when Perceval formed his government in 1809 he asked this young man of 25 to become Chancellor of the Exchequer. However Palmerston preferred the less-important office of Secretary at War. He later went on to become one of the great statesmen of the Victorian Era, leading the nation twice as Prime Minister. Here is an extremely early Palmerston signature from his days as Secretary of War.

Document Specifications:  Very Fine Document on batonne laid paper with Royal Watermark, measuring 6¾" wide x 8½" tall (170mm x 220mm) and signed by Lord Palmerston as Secretary of War. The document has two horizontal file folds with bold, strong signatures. Docketing notations on the reverse. The document was "Printed by W. Clowes and Co. Northumberland-court, Strand, for His Majesty's Stationary Office". This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a scarce War Office Document signed by one of the great British Statesmen of the 19th Century.
